Past Classes
This month’s theme, we’re just going to write. We’re just going to take pleasure in writing. We’re going to practice writing evocatively, provocatively, and all the other ways we can to entice, enthrall, engage our readers and ourselves. Because if we’re bored, chances are the reader is too.
But we’re not boring, we’re leading exciting and interesting lives that need to be told, to someone, or if not only for ourselves.
There is a certain alchemy when we write together. In just twenty minutes the writers I work with write genius, mind-blowing work that sounds as if they’ve worked on it for years. And maybe they have maybe they’ve been writing this piece for years and then prompt inspires it out. It’s truly magic and I want you to join us.
If you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time. I’ll be going on hiatus for August. Back in September, but why not start off your summer casual? Committed to your work and yourself?
You don’t have to join all the workshops, if you want just come on Sundays, or just come on Thursdays, or do both. Classes are not recorded, but email prompts and notes are sent so you can write along.

Mastering the Art of the Elevator Pitch.
The pitch is a work of art, maybe the most important one you’ll write. Oftentimes we’re tempted to be vague. It’s about mother daughter relationships. No. Tell me the specifics. Tell me the details. Mother daughter relationships are different in twelfth century China than 1960s New York or they might be the same. But give me the who, the where and the when.
We’ll work on succinct and concise language. (Also perfect example because I should really only use one of those words, since they mean roughly the same thing ;-)) Which is to say will you use humor in your writing? What is your tone? What qualities or traits of yourself as the “narrator” do you want to amplify? Like the caterpillar asking Alice, we’ll answer the question: “Who are you?” Who are you when you’re writing this piece?
We’ll whittle down to the essentials. With a focus on the why for our readers. What will they learn? What will they experience by reading your work?
And if you’re thinking I’m not ready for this then it precisely the time you should do it. It takes a lot of writing to figure out exactly what you’re trying to say.
At the end of this masterclass, you’ll have the perfect sentence memorized. So when someone asks you, what do you write? What’s your book about? You’ll be able to answer with confidence.
And of course, we’ll pitch. Half the work of being a writer is getting the work out there anyway you can with the knowledge that you’ll write more. We’ll discuss my favorite magazines, websites that are publishing phenomenal work and how to send to them.

The class will be via Zoom starting Thursday, July 16th and every Thursday (July 16, 23, 30, August 6 &13) for 5 weeks every Thursday from 18h00-19h30 Central European Time which is 9:00-11am Pacific Time.
The class is open to all levels of writers, you don't have to "be a writer" to join.
There will be some short reading assignments, writing prompts, and discussion of literary techniques as well as daily practices of writing and inspiration. Stop putting writing as just another bullet point on your to do list.
Sharing is optional, though I strongly encourage you to send me your work and I will provide feedback.
We'll look at why it's best to start "in the middle of" and the vocabulary of heroine storytelling.
The goal will be to have a finished engaging, empowered personal biography that tells the story of your life in a nutshell. Your accomplishments, your ideas, your obstacles and watershed moments, the identities you have inhibited throughout your life, and a vision for yourself in the future.
This polished bio you will have at the end of the class can be used in numerous ways, from the start of the book we've always wanted to write to your social media profile or just for yourself. When we write our past in an empowering way we create our future legacy. I truly believe by writing we make our dreams come true.

The goal of this class is to give you a counterpoint.
So when someone says, Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, (when not referencing The Princess Bride) you can say Sappho, Hypatia, and Pandrosion.
When someone says Nietzche or Freud, you can respond with Sabina Spierlrein and Karen Horney.
And when someone says Darwin, you can say Lynn Margulis and know who you’re talking about and why her theory of collaboration not competition as the major force of evolution is the kind of thinking we need right now.
And when someone says Einstein, you can say Emmy Noether. Or Kepler and Newton you can counterpoint with Wang Zhenyi. The proverbial list goes on and on....
Haven’t heard of these women? That's okay. I hadn't either. But by the end of this class these women's names will be on the tips of our tongues just as easily as all these so called creators of 'civilization.' And we'll bring our knowledge up to present times, looking at the current female world leaders and how what we value in a leader is changing.
We’ll do some reading and some writing in this class. We’ll share with others the women that have inspired us. And we’ll look at how we can retell their stories in our own lives.
What's really important is that we'll put them in the context of world history and how their lives can inspire ours.
How do we retain their names? By using them, by retelling their stories in our own words. Women were always there. I don't believe the myth that women didn’t do things--didn't get credit for what they did, yes. Have been systematically erased from history? Yes. Had the PR machine of patriarchy behind them? No.
We will be the PR Firm for these women, all women from around the world. I hope you'll join me!

This masterclass could be called Mastering the Art of Seducing Your Readers. Which is what it really is about, how to write a provocative scene that keeps the pages turning.
We’ll be looking at some of my favorite books as well as my own, Women À La Mode, not to worry if you haven't read it, that might be helpful, but is not necessary.
But I can promise you that no one is going to break down each and every scene and how to structure your book like this.

Obviously there are no absolutes in art as to what is great or not but by following your own intentions, obsessions and confessions, we arrive at something ingenious. The combination of the three makes for quite an interesting essay, story or song. We say worry is just misguided imagination and jealousy is in specificity. In these four masterclasses we’ll do imaginative prompts to set your intentions, follow your obsessions, and of course we’ll confess. (but only if you want to)
We’ll study non-conformist writers who were doing exactly that, what it means to set intentions, how we question and investigate deeper our obsessions, and how do we confess in safety? We’ll be like explorers on an archeological dig of our own minds, which to me is the very best kind.
All classes will be recorded, but the recording will be paused when we share. (It’s definitely better to join live, but if you can’t make it you can still have the lecture aspect of the class.) It will be fun, we’ll hang out, talk shop, and write, write, write!!
